Five Picturesque Spots in Cologne

All you need is love and charming cityscapes.

Germany's fourth most populous city, Cologne, is built on the banks of river Rhine. You might have already heard about it because it is the residence of the country's most visited landmark which is also a world heritage site, the Cologne Cathedral. People from all over the world visit this metropolis especially for its famous carnival celebrated yearly in November. The name Cologne was derived from a locally manufactured perfume called as Eau de Cologne that dates back to the 18th century. I have been to this bustling city a couple of times and it was high time that I wrote few lines about some of its most picturesque spots.

Instagrammable Spots of Cologne

Cologne is beautiful. There is no shortage of beautiful photography spots here. So, that you do not get overwhelmed, in this post I have short-listed the top 5 locations which you may want to visit to make the most out of your trip to this German city. So, get ready to enjoy a romantic walk on the Rhine promenade while sipping some local Kölsch beer.

I. Equestrian Statue Emperor Wilhelm I

Although the Equestrian Statue of Emperor Wilhelm I is not seen in the image, do type it in your navigation to reach this spot. While I was here, multiple people came to me asking me if I can take a picture of them with the mighty Cologne Cathedral and the prominent Cologne bridge as the backdrop. That tells how frequently this spot is visited by locals or tourists. I would call it a spot that summarizes the excellence of Cologne in one go.

II. Hohenzollern Bridge

The Hohenzollern Bridge is actually a railway bridge loaded with thousands of love locks. These padlocks which give a gorgeous, colourful touch to the bridge have been decorated by lovers over a decade now. The key of the padlock has to be then thrown into Rhine as a sign of eternal love. Some locks have romantic inscriptions that could make you feel nostalgic. Tell me, would you leave behind a lock if you visit this bridge ?

III. Banks of Kennedy Ufer

The best view over the Cologne old town is from the Kennedy banks of Deutz. In the past Deutz used to be a separate town. It was later integrated to Cologne in the 19th century. The Kennedy banks are lined with concrete stairs which give the observer full opportunity to enjoy the historic buildings on the opposite bank. The best time to visit this location is at sunset. The famous Fisch Market, the Great Saint Martin Church as well as the Cologne Cathedral are clearly visible from here.

IV. Auf dem Rothenberg Street

The old town of Cologne has innumerable breweries and restaurants. As I arrived early one morning in the old town, I could still see that the party wasn't over. The old town also boasts many narrow historic alleys like "Auf dem Rothenberg" seen in the image, the backdrop of which is enhanced by the Great Saint Martin Church. Decorated with rustic lanterns and lined by cozy tradition buildings, these alleys only take you back in time.

V. Fischmarkt Square

The Fish Market of Cologne was actually a fish market in the 12th century. In the past, this square was known by many different names including a French one. Like many other German places, even the Fish Market was destroyed in the world war. However, it was rebuilt using the historical architecture. Today, the Fish Market is a pride of the Rhine promenade attracting strollers for quick moment of appreciation. The colourful houses and the Great Saint Martin Church in the vicinity make this spot one of the most instagrammable locations of Cologne.

You guessed right ! I am a lover of charming European towns and especially the German ones. I have a huge list of such places which I am yet to visit. Cologne was included in my bucket list. And now I can strike it out. However, I have a feeling it wasn't my last visit to this pretty place. I hope you had fun reading this post. Stay tuned as there is more to come on my blog.
