Vilsalpsee-Schrecksee-Traualpsee
A very special hiking trip on the German-Austrian border starts on the impressive lake called as the Vilsalpsee. The surrounding Limestone Alps and the majestic blue waters are highly motivating.
Adventure awaits.
Details
Start: Parking lot on Vilsalpsee
Distance: 18 kms
Duration: 8 hours
Ascent: 1100 m
Level: Difficult
Highest altitude: 1980 m
Route: Tannheim valley (along bank of lake Vilsalpsee) - Schrecksee - Landsberger Lodge - Lake Traualpsee - Tannheim valley (lake Vilsalpsee)
The trail is marked for milestones provided in the route above. So you won't get lost. As this is an alpine hike, one needs a good pair of hiking shoes and energy supplements. Some alpine hiking experience is a pre-requisite.
Go wild for a while.
Vilsalpsee is on the Austrian side. The trail starts light but it soon turns highly steep and full of gravels. Yet, the landscape will keep you dumbfounded. The alpine vegetation along the way and the limestone mountains have contrasting shades. After ascending around 5 kms there is a grandiose view of the Vilsalpsee.
Hike more. Worry less.
Each step taken on the hike rewards with jaw-dropping scenery. After around 8 kms, a view over the lake Schrecksee will definitely overwhelm you. This lake falls on the German side at 1813 m in the Bavarian alps. Take some break at this amazing panorama to re-energize yourself for the rest of the tour.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
A rest stop called as the Landsberger Lodge after the 13th km offers a chance to relax and enjoy some local meals or beer on top of a mini lake called as the Lache. Just a km distant is another lake called the Traualpsee. Nonetheless, one has to to hike the remaining 5 kms for about 2 hours in order to reach back to the lake Vilsalpsee. Gravel paths with large stones make the ascent down difficult. But do not worry, a good number of breaks and nutriments will help you through this challenge.
At 18 km, you are back where you started early this morning i.e. the Vilsalpsee lake. Take some last shots and bid adieu to this goddess lake before resuming your journey back home.
Outcome
All in all, it is an extremely diverse trail that encloses three gorgeous lakes, the Vilsalpsee, the Lache and the Traualpsee. To that a distant view of the lake Schrecksee is a boon.
I hope you liked this post. Join me next time on this trail to see how the different seasons render varied contrasting shades to this dreamy alpine landscape.
