Treasures from Switzerland

While many are enchanted by well-known Switzerland's prominent cities, the true magic lies hidden in the tranquil embrace of its countryside. Often overlooked by mainstream tourism, the Swiss villages radiate a magical charm, particularly those located in the picturesque region of Tessin. Here, the rhythmic harmony of nature and tradition creates an atmosphere that feels like a journey back in time. In this exploration, I invite you to discover the lesser-known paths and delve into four extraordinary villages that have quietly embraced their role as treasures from Switzerland.

Morcote

Standing proud on the shores of Lake Lugano in the canton of Tessin, Morcote, a gem within Switzerland's countryside, invites travelers with its timeless beauty. This gorgeous village is distinguished by its well-preserved medieval architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and colorful houses that cascade down the hillside. Morcote is home to the iconic Santa Maria del Sasso church, perched on a vantage point offering panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Strolling through the village, visitors encounter charming squares, artisan boutiques, and inviting cafés. The Parco Scherrer, a botanical park displaying exotic flora, adds a touch of botanical splendor to the village's allure. Morcote is a haven for those seeking tranquility, history, and the sheer elegance of Swiss village life.

Foroglio

Situated in the majestic Bavona Valley of the Tessin canton, Foroglio graces the Swiss landscape with its bewitching presence. This charming village is cradled within the towering peaks and lush forests, creating an awe-inspiring setting. Foroglio is renowned for its iconic waterfall, Cascata di Foroglio, which plunges dramatically into the valley, casting a magical mist over the surroundings. The village itself exudes an authentic alpine atmosphere, with traditional stone houses and meandering pathways that evoke a sense of tranquility. As you explore Foroglio, immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of the region, visit the charming village chapel, and savor local delicacies in the cozy restaurants that dot the landscape. Corippo

A pretty village from the Verzasca Valley, Corippo is known for its well-preserved stone houses, showcasing traditional Swiss architecture against the backdrop of lush greenery. Corippo holds the distinction of being the smallest municipality in Switzerland, providing an intimate and authentic experience for visitors. As you wander through the narrow streets, you'll encounter the beautiful Oratory of San Bernardo, a small chapel that adds to the village's historical appeal. Don't miss the chance to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and immerse yourself in the tranquility that defines Corippo.

The last Swiss village of my trip, Lavertezzo Valle (Verzasca) is renowned for its enchanting bridge Ponte dei Salti under which the Verzasca River flows gracefully, revealing crystal-clear waters and smooth riverbed stones. The village itself boasts traditional stone houses with charming flower-filled balconies, creating a postcard-perfect scene. The highlight, Ponte dei Salti, is a centuries-old double-arched stone bridge, allowing visitors to witness daring jumps into the refreshing river below.
