On the internet, you will find many articles about great travel itineraries to the Faroes. Many visitors stick to what they have read and do not explore further. This way they miss out on many beautiful places these North-Atlantic islands have to offer, I am no different. However, this time I stepped out of my comfort zone and explored areas way beyond what I read or heard about. And so, I got to know about a hidden gem called Viðoy. In this post, I have mentioned 3 reasons why Viðoy should be on your bucket list.

If you would like to do a recap of why to visit the Faroe Islands, best time to visit the Faroe Islands and easiest way to access any destination, then do read the introductory section of my page Places on Vágar that will blow your mind.

About Viðoy

Viðoy is the northernmost island of the Faroes. Only 600 people live on the island in 2 different municipalities named Viðareiði and Hvannasund. Since tourism is scarce here, I had all the peace I needed to be creative. Viðoy is located 55 km away from the capital city Tórshavn and 98 km from the Vágar international airport. The islands are well connected with bridges, under sea tunnels and mountain tunnels. So, you won’t have any problems reaching Viðoy.

Why Viðoy should be on your bucket list

Viðoy is home to the Enniberg cliff which makes the northernmost point of the Faroe Islands and is the highest promontory of the world. The views from Enniberg cliff are mesmerizing. It is a part of the highest peak on the island called Villingadalsfjall. I took an accommodation in Viðareiði. From my house, I had great view overs the Malinsfjall mountain. Viðoy is a hiker's paradise. All visitors start their hike in Viðareiði. Below are my 3 reasons why Viðoy should be on your bucket list.

An extraordinary landscape

If you have watched my video from the introductory section above, you will understand what I mean by an extraordinary landscape. The village Viðareiði is situated right between the cone-shaped Malinsfjall and the highest mountain Villingadalsfjall. This combination forms a unique island shape that you will not find anywhere else in the world. After I flew my drone from Viðareiði viewpoint, I could not believe my eyes as I witnessed the most beautiful scene of my life. The ocean on both sides of Viðareiði and the gigantic Villingadalsfjall have left a lasting impression in my mind.

Meet the local cattle

If you are also a fan of the cute Faroese highland cattle, then you will find them on Viðoy. The highland cows are not as common as sheep on the Faroes. You will have to keep your eyes wide open to be able to locate them. Below I have provided google location of the farm where I could capture these highly photogenic cows. In fact, I had the chance to photograph two cute little calfs. The highland cattle can be found in farms on many other Faroese islands. I had been searching them throughout my visit but it was only in my last days on Viðoy that I could finally find them. The highlander cattle have a gorgeous cinnamon-coloured fur which helps them thrive in harsh weather conditions.

A breathtaking hike

Villingardalsfjall is the 3rd highest mountain of the Faroes. It rises to an elevation of 841 meters. The views from its top are rewarding which is why it is very popular among hikers. However, the climb to Villingardalsfjall is difficult. Hike only when the weather conditions allow. Carry enough snacks and water if you decide to take this hike. The highlight of views from Villingardalsfjall is the cone-shaped Malinsfjall and the silhouette of the neighbouring islands Kalsoy, Kunoy and Borðoy. One important thing to note is that like many other hikes even the Villingardalsfjall hike has a fee. It is DKK 200 and must be placed in the mailbox of the gate that leads to the trail.
